Baseball: Behind Complete Game, Buchetto is Little East Pitcher-of-the-Week

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Eastern Connecticut State University senior left-handed pitcher Ron Buchetto (Clinton) has been named Little East Conference Pitcher-of-the-Week for the week ending May 7.

In the final regular-season and home start of his career this past Wednesday, Buchetto tossed the team’s first nine-inning complete game of the season in 5-3 non-conference win over Wheaton College, the No. 2 ranked team in the NCAA Division

The weekly LEC honor – in the final week of the awards program -- is the first in the career of Buchetto, a four-year member of the program and three-year varsity letterwinner.

Buchetto faced only seven batters over the minimum, allowing four hits while fanning a career-high eight, walking one and hitting two batters. Buchetto threw 83 of his 114 pitches for strikes as Eastern won its season-high fourth straight game. Buchetto retired ten straight after a leadoff single. With Eastern leading5-2, he left two runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh, ending the sixth with a swinging strikeout and the seventh with an infield pop. He completed the complete game with a 1-2-3 ninth which included  a strikeout looking a strikeout swinging and game-ending ground ball to short.

This year, Buchetto is second on the staff in innings (44.2) and strikeouts (33) and third in starts (7). In nine appearances, he is 2-3 with a 5.04 ERA.

Eastern’s previous Little East Conference weekly award-winners include sophomores Alex Parkos (Meriden), Jordan Muchin (West Hartford) and Nick Rascati (Wallingford). Parkos was tabbed as Player-of-the-Week in the eighth report (May 1), Muchin as Pitcher-of-the-Week Award in the fourth report (April 3) and Rascati as Pitcher-of-the-Week in the second report (March 20).

Seeded fourth, defending champion Eastern (20-14) opens play in the six-team Little East Conference double-elimination tournament Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. against third-seeded Massachusetts Dartmouth (22-18) at the USM Baseball Field on the campus of top-seeded University of Southern Maine. Thursday, Eastern will either play a winners’ bracket game at 3:30 p.m. or an elimination game at 12:30 p.m.
