Baseball: Behind Keller (5-for-5), Warriors Roll Past Dean in Non-Conference Victory

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Junior Dale Keller (Oxford) was 5-for-5 and drove in two runs and juniors Alexander White (West Hartford) and Alex Parkos (Meriden) each had two hits and scored two runs and combined for three RBI in Eastern Connecticut State University's 12-0 baseball win over Dean College Wednesday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadum.

In the first meeting between the programs, Eastern (12-8) had 14 hits and Dean (7-17-1) commited four errors and three Bulldog pitchers walked nine batters. Leading 2-0, the Warriors sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth and scored eight runs on seven hits – four of them doubles --two errors, two walks and a sacrifice fly.

In the eight-run fourth, senior Merlyn Herrera (La Yaquiza, DR) had two singles and scored twice, and Keller doubled, singled, drove in a run and scored a run. Sophomore Jake LeFevre (Mansfield Center), White and Parkos had consecutive RBI doubles in the inning.

In the game, White and senior D.J. Scavone (Auburn, MA) both reached base four times, White with his two hits and two walks and Scavone with four walks.  Keller singled in the second, doubled and singled, scored a run and drove in a run in the fourth, singled in a run in the sixth, and singled in the eighth.

Junior lefty Nick Rascati (Wallingford) threw four scoreless innings in his first career regular-season start (52nd appearance), leaving with a 10-0 lead after throwing 49 of his 63 pitches for strikes. Junior righty Jason Staub (Portland) tossed two hitless innings for his first win since 2016 and sophomore righty Jack Risley (Willimantic) and freshman righty Ryan Sheehan (Southington) combined for five strikeouts and allowed only one hit over the last three innings.

Freshman righty Brian Hadden, Dean's starting pitcher, was the only Bulldog player with more than one hit, collecting two singles. He pitched the first four innings.

Eastern visits Western New England University Thursday in a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m.
