PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Alexander White (West Hartford) had four hits and scored four runs when the Eastern Connecticut State University team opened its season with 9-4, 7-3 loss to LaRoche University Monday afternoon. The first game went seven innings
Eastern trailed 4-3 in the ninth inning of the opener before Joe Professor belted a three-run home run in the top of the inning. Batting leadoff, White had three hits and scored three runs in the nightcap. John Mesagno (Tappan, NY) also added three hits in the second game, while junior Jake LeFevre (Mansfield Center) was 2-for-2 in the second game.
Jordan Muchin (West Hartford), a senior righty who was starting the season-opener for the third straight year, pitched the first four innings of the opener, allowing eight hits and six runs. LeRoche had three RBI singles to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the first game, and after Eastern countered with all four of its runs in the game to take a 4-3 in the third. In the inning, White had a two-run single, Mesagno an RBI triple and Alex Parkos (Meriden) a run-scoring double. One of the team's top hitters as a freshman in 2017, Mesagno returned to the team after sitting out last year with an injury.
Eastern faces Marietta College Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Port Charlotte.
