Field Hockey: In Easy LEC Win, Kallgren Completing Rapid Run to Career Record

SALEM, Mass. --  Junior Alex Kallgren (Dudley, MA) scored twice to tie the Eastern Connecticut State University career field hockey record for goals and junior Veronica Winthrop (Roxbury) and sophomore Stephanie Hogan (Northford) scored their first career goals in a 4-1 Little East Conference victory over Salem State University Saturday afternoon.

Kallgren needed only 48 career matches to tie the record of 29 goals, set in 75 games by E-Club Hall of Famer Mo Deegan (2001-04). Kallgren gave Eastern a 2-0 lead at halftime -- taking over the team lead with her fifth and sixth of the year -- and Eastern (6-4, 5-2 LEC) went on to its fourth win in the last five outings, and second in as many years over Salem (1-8, 0-7 LEC) after losing seven straight in the series.
Winthrop made it 3-0 in the opening minutes of the second half, and after assisting on Kallgren's first goal, Hogan pushed the lead to 4-0 midway though the second half. Salem's Marissa Penge spoiled the combined shutout bid of senior Samantha Scavo (Redding) and junior Maddie LaRusso (Enfield) in the final eight minutes.
Salem senior goalie Carolyn Woodin made 16 saves as the Warriors outshot the Vikings, 28-2, and were credited with 11 of the 12 penalty corners in the game.
Eastern hosts Keene State College Saturday at noon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex in a re-match of last year's LEC title game, won by Keene, 2-1.
