WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- Eastern Connecticut State University athletics is pleased to officially announce our campaign to honor program founder and pioneer Clyde Washburne by naming the Eastern Softball Stadium at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex in his honor.
In keeping with Clyde’s wishes, all monies raised are earmarked for an endowed fund to support our softball program. One of the driving forces behind the campaign is softball alumnus and E-Club Hall of Famer Tammy Schondelmayer ’90 of New London, a four-year starter at shortstop, senior captain, member of the 1986 national title team, and current director of athletics at Bloomfield High School
Says Schondelmayer, “In my opinion, there is no other person more deserving to have a facility at Eastern named after him than Coach Clyde Washburne. Clyde is the reason the softball program at Eastern has been so successful over the years – he certainly put Eastern Softball on the map. The history of the program can all be directly traced back to him and his influence. He is a true pioneer.”
Continued Schondelmayer of Washburne, an NFCA Hall of Famer who coached the program through its first 11 season, winning four national championships in a span of six years. “I can honestly say that Coach Clyde Washburne has been the single most impactful person in my life. When I was young softball player at Eastern, Clyde was certainly instrumental in my growth and development within the game, but his influence far surpassed the softball field. His ability to instill confidence, poise and perseverance in me were important to my development as a person and a future leader of a high school athletic department. He epitomizes the word ‘coach’ in every sense and I am so grateful to have had the chance to play for such an icon.”
How Can I Help?
There are many ways to donate! One-time donations are happily accepted. However, many people are choosing to make pledges on a five-year plan. Just $100 a year for five years gets us $500 closer to Washburne Field! You can even make a pledge using monthly charges to your credit card. Charging your card $10 a month will be $600 pledged over the course of the campaign. You can cut and paste this link into your browser to pledge online: http://www.easternct.edu/development/making-your-gift/. Simply mark on your pledge “Clyde Washburne Endowed Softball Fund.” No donation is too small, and Coach Washburne is grateful to all the folks who are honoring his legacy.
