SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Erin Collins (Millis, MA) and sophomore Makeda Bailey (East Hartford) combined on a shutout in goal and junior forward Abbey Fitzsimmons' (West Hartford) goal 12 minutes into the second half stood up as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer salvaged a 1-0 victory over Pacific University (OR) on the second day of the Springfield College Invitational Saturday afternoon at Brock Affleck Field.
Springfield scored all of its goals in the first half in a 5-1 win over Roger Williams University in Saturday night's championship game. Eastern lost to RWU, 1-0 in overtime Friday and Springfield shut out Pacific, 2-0.
Fitzsimmons' third career goal came in the 57th minute and made a winner of Bailey, who played the second half and made one save to gain her first career win in only her second appearance. Collins stopped four shots in her third career start.
Eastern outshot the Boxers, 10-8, and the defense gave up only one corner kick.
Eastern hosts Elms College Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference match at Thomas Nevers Field.
