WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- Eastern Connecticut State University middle hitter Carly Balskus (Hebron) has become the program’s 28th selection since 1987 to the annual NEWVA (New England Women's Volleyball Association) Senior Classic, which is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Lahue Physical Education Center on the campus of Eastern Nazarence College.
The six-foot Balskus became the program's seventh selection in the last eight years -- fourth in five years under fifth-year head coach Megan Silver-Droesch.
A total of 28 seniors were named to the team and will compete in an exhibition game. A skills competition is planned from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., followed by lunch. The all-star game gets underway at 12:30 p.m.
Balskus, a three-year member of the Eastern program and a four-year collegiate player, is joined on Team Gray by Little East Conference rivals Riley Bunker of Keene State College and Eileen Shi of UMass Boston.
Balskus was a second-team All-LEC selection and is also an All-LEC Academic qualifier. In her Eastern career, she accumulated 614 kills and 293 digs in 88 matches. She recorded 49 service aces, with 39 of those coming in 2018. She was a key attacker in leading her team this year to its first LEC tournament championship since 2007 and a final overall record of 23-7. In her senior season opener, she recorded a career high nine services aces against Regis College, and later amassed a career high 21 kills against Salve Regina.
