Box Score WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- After becoming the first team to score against Eastern Connecticut State University this year on the Warriors' home field, Western New England University scored 32 seconds into overtime to post a 2-1 overtime victory at Thomas Nevers Field.
The game featured two of New England's top-ranked teams in Western New England (8th) and Eastern (6th).
Shawn DaCruz came off the bench in overtime to score his first goal of the season on his only shot of the match. Western New England (10-2-1) scored after possessing on the overtime kickoff. DaCruz volleyed a hard low shot from the top of the box inside the right post past Eastern (7-3-1) keeper Carl Appel, who allowed as many as two goals in a match for only the second time this season.
Eastern led early on Carl Stensland's (Storrs) first collegiate goal with two minutes left in the first half but WNEU tied the match 67 seconds into the second half on Shawn Fitzpatrick's goal on a pretty assist from Eric Marcellino.
Stensland's goal came on a 25-yard floater while Fitzpatrick beat Appel to the ball in the right side of the box and slipped it under the sprawling keeper.
Eastern hosts Keene State College Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Little East Conference match.
