Downer's Goal In Overtime Lifts Eastern Women's Soccer over Keene, 2-1

Box Score

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Senior forward Chelsea Downer (Colchester) scored the game-winning goal late in overtime as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer team remained undefeated in Little East Conference play with a 2-1 victory over Keene State College Saturday afternoon at Thomas Nevers Field.

Eastern's (6-4-1, 4-0-0 LEC seventh straight home win over Keene (8-6-0, 2-2-0 LEC) snaps the Owls' seven-game winning streak and keeps the Warriors with a share of first place in the conference with the University of Massachusetts Boston, which knocked homestanding University of Massachusetts Dartmouth from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 2-1 victory Saturday.

It marks the second straight conference match in which Eastern has come away with a win by scoring in the final minutes of sudden-death overtime. Against Keene, Downer's team-leading seventh goal of the season on an assist from freshman back Kaitlin Thibodeau (Tolland) came with 5:40 left in overtime. In last Saturday's 1-0 LEC win over Western Connecticut State University at the Mansfield Outdoor complex, Downer helped set up the game-ending goal by senior forward Taylor Buchanan (Ellington) with 5:30 remaining in the 20-minute extra session.

The match featured last year's LEC regular-season champion in Keene State and the LEC playoff titlist in Eastern. The Warriors won on penalty kicks after scoreless overtime play at Keene in last year's final.

Saturday, the Warriors tied the match with nine minutes left in regulation on Buchanan's third goal of the season with a one-timer off the hands of  Keene sophomore keeper Torrie Crenson (North Salem, NY), and Downer blasted in the game-winner after touching the ball once off a cross from Thibodeau.

Eastern, unbeaten this season in overtime (2-0-1), trailed until the final ten minutes after junior midfielder Kristen Huckins (Westmoreland, NH) put the visitors in front with six minutes left in the first half on a header which came from junior forward Brittany Boscarino's (Ellington) corner kick.

Eastern dominated the second half with an 11-2 advantage in shots but could not gain the equalizer against Crenson. The Warriors unloaded seven shots in the 20 minutes prior to Buchanan's game-tying goal, but only one of those bids forced Crenson to make a save.

Eastern hosts Amherst College Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex. The Lord Jeffs are ranked first in New England and No. 5 nationally.
