Eastern Finds its Stride in Second Half

Box Score

DANBURY, Conn. –  One of the top defensive teams in the Little East Conference over the last six years,  Eastern Connecticut State University's offense is keeping pace in 2012.

Saturday, active career scoring leaders Matt Furman (Montville) and Cory Tobler (Portland), both seniors, scored second-half goals and the defense posted its sixth straight h shutout as of Western Connecticut State University in as many seasons under head coach Greg DeVito in a 2-0 Little East Conference triumph Saturday night at the Westside Athletic Conference.

Ranked fourth in New England, Eastern (9-0-0, 3-0 LEC) remains one of two unbeatens in the conference, along with UMass Dartmouth. The Corsairs pounded Rhode Island College, 4-1, Saturday. Keene fell from the ranks of the conference unbeatens with a 1-0 home loss to Plymouth State.

Thus far in 2012, Eastern has outscored its opponent by a 3-to-1 margin, scorning 21 and allowing only seven. The Warriors remain undefeated through nine matches for the first time since winning their first 15 in 1969 en route to the New England championship.

Furman, the active scoring leader with 82 oints, has scored all 15 of his points this year in the last five matches. He has been named LEC Offensive Player-of-the-Year the last two weeks. Tobler, showing 51 career points, has also totaled all eight of this year's points in the last five matches.

Senior keeper Jordan Munsell (Waterford) needed three saves to register his fifth shutout in eight starts this year.

The Western (1-6-2, 1-2 LEC) offense generated the game's first shot in the second minute of play, but for the remainder of the half Eastern dominated the offensive opportunities, holding a 12-4 advantage in shots taken during the opening period.  At the 26:43 mark, junior  Mitch Power (Douglas, MA) drove around the left side of the Western defense and blasted a shot that caromed off the left post and across the face of the goal, missing the right post by inches.  After 45 minutes of play, the score remained tied at 0-0.

In the second half, Eastern picked up where it left off and continued attacking the Western defense.  After 73 minutes of scoreless play, junior Mike Radlbeck (Westbrook) brought the ball into the Western end of the field and chipped a pass over the top of the Colonial defenders.  Furman just outraced a Western defender to the ball and drilled it into the back of the net with a perfectly timed strike, giving Eastern a 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, Power delivered a pass to Tobler, who gave the Warriors an insurance goal and a 2-0 final margin of victory.

For the game, Eastern held a 20-8 advantage in shots, and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.  Western keeper Jack Holub  finished with eight saves.

Eastern hosts Worcester State University Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference match.
