Plymouth State Sends Eastern Field Hockey to 2-0 Loss

Box Score

PLYMOUTH, N.H. –  The Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey and men's and women's soccer teams found themselves in the same situation at halftime of their respective Little East Conference matches Saturday.

Unfortunately for field hockey, the favored team prevailed each time.

While the men's and women's soccer teams remained undefeated in the conference by scoring after ther break against Western Connecticut State University, the field hockey team fell shy of its upset bid when host Plymouth State University scored both of its goals in a span of six minutes after 55 scoreless minutes and went on to a 2-0 victory at Arold Field.

Positioned for its first win over Plymouth in the 17-year history of the series, Eastern dropped its fourth match in the last five outings after Emily Davis and Aisha Rai Thompson connected for goals off penalty corners (Plymouth had 19 in the match) only mnutes apart.

By winning, Plymouth (6-3, 4-1 LEC) keeps pace in the conference, remaining in a tie for second, one game behind the leaders. All four of the top teams in the conference won their matches yesterday. Eastern (3-6, 1-4 LEC) shares ninth place in the 12-team conference. The top eight finishers qualify for the LEC post-season tournament.

The Panthers out-shot the Warriors 9-2 in the game, but didn't score until the 56th minute of play.   The outcome also gave goalie Katlyn Hall a shutout in her first career start, the sophomore making saves on both of Eastern's shots in place of injuried starter Hilary Lemelin. Eastern sophomore Olivia Mullen (Bethel) turned back five shots in a strong effort marred by the goals which came six minutes apart.

After a scoreless first half, Plymouth  broke through with 15 minutes left in regulation. Sophomore Sam Carberry  took a penalty corner and Davis received the pass and fired home her third goal of the season.  Thompson tallied her first of the season five minutes later after receiving a pass from senior Olivia Colborn.

Eastern hosts Massachusetts Dartmouth Tuesday in a Little East match at 4 p.m. The Corsairs share the LEC lead with a 5-0 record.
