Young Warriors Crowned by Widener in 2013 Opener, 3-0

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Starting six newcomers, the Eastern Connecticut State University men's soccer team allowed three goals on ten shots in losing a 3-0 decision to Widener University in its 2013 opener Saturday evening at the Swarthmore College Garnet Alumni Classic.

Coming off a record 17-2-1 campaign in 2012, Eastern was credited with only seven shots. Widener (2-0-0) got two goals from Max Reid. Reid gave his team a 1-0 lead in the tenth minute, and that one-goal margin stood up until Troy Czapor and Reid connected seven minutes apart early in the second half.

The Warriors stated six newcomers, five of them freshmen. Freshman Greg Walton (Brunswick, ME) started in net for the Warriors, making one save in the first half.

Widener is looking for its first winning season in nine years.

Eastern  faces host Swarthmore Sunday at 4 p.m.
