After struggling to a 1-0 overtime win over Mitchell (1-5-0) a year ago at Thomas Nevers Field in the first meeting between the programs, Eastern (3-1-1) had no such problems this time in stretching its unbeaten streak to four straight since an opening loss.
It took the Warriors more than 31 minutes to break through for their first goal, but they followed with three strikes in an 11-minute span late in the first half, then added three more in a stretch of 12 minutes midway through the second half. Freshmen Emmanuel Caicedo (Manchester) and Ryan Pomroy (Ivoryton) contributed the first goals of their careers in starting roles, and first-year sophomore Gavin Neuendorf (Norwich) came off the bench for his first collegiate point with a late second-half goal.
In his first career start, freshman Alejandro Tobon (West Hartford) chipped in his first collegiate points with a pair of assists in the final six minutes for Eastern, ranked tenth in New England this week for the third straight week. With assists, sophomore Zane Lombardo (Portland) and Kyle Peterson (Ivoryton) also recorded their first career points off the bench.
Little resistance stood between freshman keeper Greg Walton (Brunswick, ME) and his second career shutout in his last three starts. Walton was not called upon for a save in lowering his goals-against average to 1.01.
While sophomore starting defender Cooper D'Ambrosio (Andover) returned to the lineup after sitting out two matches with a broken nose, the Warriors were without senior defender Mike Radlbeck (Westbrook), who sustained a hip flexor in overtime of Saturday's 2-1 victory over Ramapo College.
Mitchell was coming off its first win Saturday, a 1-0 verdict over Western Connecticut State University. The Warriors host Western Saturday at 1 p.m. when they open defense of their last two Little East Conference championships.
