Box Score NEWTON, Mass. – Freshman forward Elly Walker (Scarborough, ME) scored her first career goal on her only recorded shot of the match and freshman goalie Samantha Scavo (Redding) needed only two saves to record her first collegiate shutout in her first start as the Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team won in its first road match of the year, 1-0, against Lasell College Saturday afternoon at Grellier Field.
Eastern (2-1) avenged its only loss to Lasell (1-2) in this series, winning for the eighth time. The only loss came by a 1-0 score in 2010 when the teams met in Newton.
Sophomore forward Hannah Keiser (Danbury,) and All-conference sophomore midfielder Laura Chicorka (Enfield) had three and two shots on goal for Eastern, Scavo, who had recorded her first collegiate win Thursday in 35 shutout relief minutes of a 4-2 victory, got strong defensive play from starting backs senior Kelly Gawron (Ramsey, NJ) sophomores Mackenzie Brower (Granby) and Jessica Oliveira (Danbury) and freshman Alexandra Steward (Old Saybrook).
Walker, who helped her high school team last year to the Maine state finals, improved her season total to four points with her first career goal. The marker was set up when Lasell was unable to clear the zone. Walker's low shot glanced off the right post and settled into the back of the cage.
Cristina Wilson and Ashlee Pechulis each had scoring chances turned aside for Lasell, and the Lasers sophomore goalie Taylor Sheehan made six saves in the loss.
Eastern hosts Wheelock College Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
