Box Score SALEM, Mass.. – Freshman forward Sean Conway (Southington) started a flurry of scoring that helped the Eastern Connecticut State University men's soccer team shut out the Salem State University, 6-0, in a non-conference match Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
Six different players scored for Eastern (5-2-2) and nine contributed a point. Freshman midfielder Adam Traxler (Newburyport, MA) and freshman back Xavier Doran (Hebron) each had a goal and assist.
The Warriors scored three times in a span of six minutes late in the first half, then pushed the advantage to four 11 minutes into the second half. The first half was a game of possession. Both teams had corner kick opportunities, but could not to put the ball in the back of the net. With 10:45 left, Conway scored on a cross from Traxler that started a string of three unanswered goals before the half. Sophomore forward Alejandro Toban (West Hartford) and Doran each scored a goal to make it 3-0 at the half.
The second half began with Traxler heading in a thrown ball from Doran. Junior back Zane Lombardo (Portland) added the fifth goal for the Warriors in the 76th minute on an assist from sophomore forward Konnor Scarponi (Brunswick, ME). Freshman back Sean Hurley (East Hartford) finished the scoring when he lasered a shot into the back of the net.
Nondas Kargakis five saves for Salem (1-8-0). Sophomore Greg Walton (Brunswick, ME) stopped two shots in net for Eastern, which extended its unbeaten streak to seven (6-0-1) against Salem with its fifth shutout of the Vikings in that span.
Eastern hosts UMass Boston Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Little East Conference match.
