Warriors End Salem's Hex, Prevail in Overtime

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Conn. --  Senior forward Hannah Keiser (Danbury) scored her second goal of the match seven minutes into sudden death overtime to lift the Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team to a 3-2 Little East Conference victory over Salem State University Saturday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

Salem (2-10, 0-7 LEC) had forced overtime when junior forward Kathryn Hart  re-directed sophomore forward Courtney Smith's drive from the top right corner of the circle past Eastern junior goalie Samantha Scavo (Redding) with 19 minutes left.

Keiser, ranked second all-time at Eastern (7-4, 5-2 LEC) in goals, scored her 24th and 25th career goals in the match. Her fourth goal of the season came with 4:24 left in the first half and gave Eastern a 2-1 halftime lead, and her fifth goal of the season ended play in overtime. Junior midfielder Paige Schneider (East Lyme) set up the game-ending goal when she corralled the ball on the end line to the right of the cage, and sent the ball toward the front of the goal, where Keiser got a stick on it and deflected it inside the near post under the pads of Salem junior goalie Carolyn Woodin.

With four LEC matches remaining in the regular season, Eastern equals its conference victory total of a year ago and moves to within a win of last year's overall win total.

Now 6-1 at home after stopping a six-game losing streak at the hands of Salem, Eastern never trailed but couldn't shake the Vikings, who twice tied the match.
Eastern sophomore forward Alex Kallgren (Dudley, MA) – sharing third place in the conference in goals – unloaded her team-leading eighth of the season when she knocked in senior back Mackenzie Brower's (Granby) drive from the top of the circle inside the left post with 14 minutes gone.  Salem tied the match nine minutes later on a goal from sophomore forward Courtney Smith – a re-direct of a shot by senior forward Kelsey Russell – before Keiser's first goal on a deflection of senior forward Brianna Passero's (Trumbull) pass made it 2-1 with 4:24 left in the half.

Eastern dominated with a 22-6 advantage in shots and 17-6 margin in penalty corners. Scavo made one save and Woodin seven.

Eastern hosts Connecticut College in a non-conference match Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
