GORHAM, Maine --  Due in large part to its inability to score as many as two goals in a row, the Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team was unable to win its second Little East Conference match in a row, dropping a key 14-6 decision to the University of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon.

A win would have guaranteed Eastern a first-round LEC playoff home game. With one remaining LEC regular-season game, Eastern (4-10, 2-3 Little East) is now in fifth place in the conference. The Warriors have already wrapped up one of the six LEC post-season playoff berths, but are looking to nail a first-round playoff home game April 28, needing to finish third or fourth in the final standings.

Sophomore attack Sam Campobasso outscored Eastern by two goals in the match. Campobasso struck for eight goals – seven in the first half. Three of her goals came in succession midway through the first half that propelled Southern Maine (5-10, 2-2 Little East) to a five-goal, 7-2 lead. She had six of her goals to power USM to an 8-2 run that pushed it into a 12-4 advantage ten minutes into the game.

Freshman attack Katie Burke (South Windsor)  was Eastern's only multiple-goal scorer. She came off the bench for two goals and also had the team's only assist. Freshman midfielder Maggie Bodington (Stratford) won four draws, sophomore Devyne Doran (South Kingstown, RI) picked up six ground balls, sophomore Caroline Regan (Niantic) and freshman Katie Calnen (Granby) four each.

Eastern closes out the regular season Tuesday, hosting Western Connecticut State University in a conference match. Western lost its first LEC game after three wins in a 22-15 setback at unbeaten defending playoff champion Plymouth State University Saturday.
