Box Score NEWTON, Mass. – Junior Elly Walker (Scarborough, ME) and sophomore Alex Kallgren (Dudley, MA) scored goals less than ten minutes apart and the Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team opened the season with two wins for the first time in the program's 18-year history in a 2-0 non-conference victory over Lasell College Saturday afternoon at Grellier Field.
Eastern outshot the Lasers (0-2), 35-5, and had a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners in downing Lasell for the tenth time in 11 meetings all-time.
Walker scored the game-winning goal with just 11 seconds left in the first half on an assist from senior
Laura Chicorka (Enfield) and Kallgren made it 2-0 nine minutes into the second half. The goal was the second this year for both Kallgren and Walker, and 13
th in the career of Kallgren, a second-team All-Little East Conference selection as a freshman.
Junior
Samantha Scavo (Redding) needed only one save to record her tenth career save in 34 starts.
In two matches this year, Eastern has not given up a goal and has outshot its opponent 65-7, having put 50 of its shots on net. The Warriors have a 35-4 advantage in penalty corners thus far.
Eastern was coming off a 5-0 home win over Anna Maria College Tuesday in its season-opener while Lasell was beaten by national contender MIT, 6-3 Tuesday.
Eastern looks to end a nine-game losing streak at the hands of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth when it visits the Corsairs in its LEC opener Saturday at noon. Before winning its LEC opener last year, the Warriors had gone 12 years without capturing its first conference match.
UMD reached the conference championship game a year ago while Eastern lost an overtime decision to top-seeded and eventual champion Keene State College in the opening round.
