Men's Soccer: Western Ends Record for Futility With Little East Victory Over Warriors

Box Score

DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore forward Chauncey Allers notched the game-winning goal to the lead the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference match at The Westside Athletic Complex.

Western (3-6-0, 2-1-0 LEC) snaps a seven-game losing and ten-game winless (8-0-2) streak at the hands of Eastern (4-5-1, 2-1-0 LEC), last year's LEC regular-season co-champion. The 1-0 loss is the sixth in the career of Eastern sophomore keeper Ryan Murphy (Cromwell), as the Warriors fall to 1-4-0 away from home this year. It marks the first time in 14 years that the Colonials have been able to defeat Eastern on their home field.

Allers notched his team-leading fifth goal of the season when he knocked a header into the top-right corner off a nifty feed from junior midfielder Nick Kyriakidis  12 minutes into the second half. The Warriors tried to answer less than two minutes later when sophomore forward Justin Jensen (Wethersfield) booted a shot to the far side from the right wing. Sophomore keeper Luca DiCarlo   thwarted the attempt with yet another diving stop.

DiCarlo, who posted his seven shutout this year in eight starts, kept the game scoreless midway through the first half when he made an acrobatic diving save to his left on Eastern midfielder Xavier Doran's (Hebron) penalty-kick attempt.

In the second half, Western put together a tic-tac-toe style passing play and Allers' shot from the left wing banged off the right post. With less than 14 minutes remaining in regulation, Jensen gathered a long pass and headed in for a breakaway, but a defender on his heels forced his shot from 10 yards out to just miss the net, wide-right. The visitors continued to apply the pressure in the waning moments, however, Western was able to withstand the surge.

Both teams had quality scoring chances in the opening half but neither could capitalize. Eastern freshman forward Griffin Luczek (Lee, NH) – the team scoring leader -- had the first opportunity for the visitors less than five minutes in but his shot to the open side of the net missed right. Shortly thereafter, Western  sophomore midfielder Darion Richeme blasted a low shot just wide of the left post.

Moments after the saved penalty kick, Doran  ripped a rocket off the crossbar. Doran collected eight of Eastern's 16 shots, with DiCarlo stopping two of them. Four of Murphy's six saves came against Allers.

With its first LEC loss, Eastern falls into a three-way tie for second place in the conference behind 2015 playoff champion UMass Boston (3-0-0). The Beacons, 10-0-0 overall, pounded the University of Southern Maine, 9-0, Saturday.

Eastern  hosts Connecticut College Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference match.
