Box Score WENHAM, Mass.—First-year sophomore transfer Kelsey Santagata (Stamford) has been away from competitive basketball for a year-and-a-half, but she hasn't played that way.
Saturday afternoon, the 5-foot-10 inch transfer forward from Keene State reached double figures in points and rebounds for the second time in two days in sparking the Eastern Connecticut State University women's basketball team to two wins at the Gordon College Classic at the Bennett Center.
Coming off Friday's 10-point, 15-rebound effort in a four-point win over New England College, Santagata followed that up with 14 points and 13 rebounds in the team's emphatic 79-51 victory over host Gordon. After Eastern (3-0) was outrebounded in a rare occurance (52-46) in the tougher-than-expected battle with New England, Santagata grabbed nearly 30 percent of the Warriors' individual rebounds to pace Eastern to a +51-33 dominance on the boards against the Fighting Scots.
The only newcomer in the starting lineup his year, Santagata is averaging a double-double with averages of 12.0 points and 10.3 rebounds and also tops the team with eight total steals.
Eastern hit its stride in the second period Saturday, quickly extending its lead to double digits before the Fighting Scots could blink. It took Gordon nearly four minutes to put any points on the board in the period and the Warriors outscored the Scots 23-8 to take a 20-point, 42-22, advantage into the break. Eastern extended the lead to as many as 35 in the third before clearing the bench over the final 10-minute quarter.
Senior guard Jordyn Nappi (Southington) provided much of the offense early and finished with a game-high 21 points, while freshman forward Mya Villard (Cromwell) had ten points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. All 15 players saw time.
