Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior all-conference midfielder Paige Schneider (East Lyme) made up for lost time Saturday with her second five-goal performance in her last four matches to power the Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a 13-10 non-conference victory over Worcester State University.
Schneider, who missed Wednesday's 14-8 non-conference loss at Roger Williams due to a class conflict, scored three times in a run of six straight Eastern (2-2) goals in an early eight-minute stretch that put the Warriors in command of a four-goal lead just nine minutes into play. It was the second time in the last four matches that Schneider reached five goals, but first time in a game which did not extend into overtime.
Schneider, who moved into the team scoring lead (10 goals on the season) with sophomore Katie Burke (South Windsor), later capped a three-goal Eastern spurt with her fifth goal of the match early in the second half which opened up the Warriors' lead to six, 11-5.
Having beaten Eastern by a total of three goals in victories each of the last two seasons, Worcester (1-1) got a pair of goals from Alaina Martin in the first 33 seconds while Eastern played three players down after being assessed yellow cards prior to the opening draw for possessing sticks which did not meet the standards for competition. However, Schneider got things going for Eastern with a short-handed goal 2:16 into the match that sliced Worcester's lead in half. Schneider added two more goals during that six-goal streak, with sophomore Maggie Bodington (Stratford), senior Tess Mraz (Fairfield) and Burke also contributing in the run that made it 6-2. Burke, Mraz and junior Caroline Regan (Niantic) also chipped set up scoring strikes with assists.
The Warriors led by five, 10-5, at halftime. The Lancers outscored Eastern 5-2 in the final 22 minutes, but the Warriors held the hosts off the board after Kaila Chase's unassisted goal made it a three-goal game with six minutes left.
Junior goalie Taylor Emmerson (Colchester) made eight of her ten saves in the second half when Worcester doubled Eastern's shot total, recording an 18-9 advantage.
Burke followed Schneider with three goals and two assists, while sophomore defender Katie Calnen (Granby) caused four turnovers. All-conference junior defender Devyne Doran (South Kingstown, RI) caused three turnovers, picked up three ground balls and won two draws. Freshman midfielder Michelina Pinto (Groton) also picked up three ground balls.
Eastern plays its third home match Saturday in a non-conference battle with Wellesley College at noon.
