Box Score DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team unloaded 27 shots –forcing Western Connecticut State University goalie Kristy Trotta to make 21 saves – as the Warriors posted a 2-0 Little East Conference shutout Tuesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The win is the fifth straight for Eastern (4-3, 3-1 LEC) over Western (2-5, 1-3 LEC), the fourth by shutout in that stretch.
Senior Paige Schneider (East Lyme) scored twice for Eastern ten minutes apart early in the first half. She jumped on a rebound to score her second goal of the season just three minutes into play, then made it 2-0 on a pass from sophomore Stephanie Hogan (North Branford) in the 14th minutes.
Western had a pair of scoring chances late in the opening stanza but both of senior Brianna Reda's attempts – the team's only two shots of the half -- sailed just wide.
The Colonials had a chance to cut into the advantage during a scoreless second half, however, rookie forward Carly Matasavage's blast from 10 yards out missed by a fraction. Trotta continued her stellar play throughout the half but Western was unable to capitalize.
Eastern piled up a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. Senior goalie Samantha Scavo (Redding) did not make a save in her second shutout of the year.
A third of the way through the LEC regular-season schedule, Eastern is one of four teams with three conference victories. Keene State College and Worcester State University are both undefeated (3-0), with Eastern and Plymouth State University at 3-1.
Eastern, which evens road record at 2-2, hosts Worcester State Saturday at noon.
