Box Score WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – More than 109 minutes of scoreless soccer was interrupted momentarily by two goals 23 seconds apart as the Eastern Connecticut State University and Wesleyan University men's soccer teams played to a 1-1 double-overtime non-conference draw Tuesday afternoon at Thomas Nevers Field.
With Eastern (0-2-1) playing its home-opener and Wesleyan (0-0-1) playing its season-opener, the game's goals came 23 seconds apart in the final 14 minutes of regulation and the teams eventually settled for only the second draw in the 17-game series.
For the second straight season, Wesleyan came away without a victory despite outshooting Eastern by a wide margin. A year ago, the Cardinals amassed a 17-7 shot advantage in a 1-0 loss in Middletown when former two-time Little East Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Year Cooper D'Ambrosio struck 13 minutes into the second half. Tuesday, Wesleyan outshot Eastern 15-2, only managing a tie when junior forward Adam Cowie-Haskell (Roslindale, MA) scored on a header on a perfect cross from the right side to the left post by freshman midfielder Jack Wolf with13:31 left in regulation.
Eastern had little time to celebrate it 1-0 lead, which came when freshman forward Griffin Luczek (Lee, NH) played a ball at midfield to sophomore forward Justin Grant (Cromwell) streaking up the right side. Grant cut inside the box and placed a left-footed shot low into the far corner of the net. It was the second goal this year for Grant, who had his freshman season ended due to injury seconds into his first game.
Eastern sophomore Ryan Murphy (Cromwell) made six saves – two of them outstanding ones – to help the Warriors pick up the tie. Wesleyan keepers Brian Harnett (Montclair, NJ) and Jack Katkavich were not credit with a save. Katkavich replaced Harnett 15 minutes into the game.
Murphy's best save was his first one when he stretched out to his left – despite being screened by the Eastern wall -- to get a hand on a low, 19-yard free kick by sophomore midfielder Eric Gooden just 4:05 into play. Two minutes before Grant beat Katkavich for the first goal, Wesleyan senior midfielder Danny Rubenstein took a short pass from freshman Griffin Godsick and fired a drive from the top of the 18 that sailed just over the crossbar.
Wesleyan had the better of play in the second overtime, with junior midfielder Charlie Livingstone and junior midfielder Garret Hardesty combining for three near-misses. Livingstone lifted a drive over the crossbar with seven minutes left, Hardesty following three minutes later with a shot which sailed wide, and another inside the final minute which also carried high.
Eastern freshman back Sam Hurlburt (Cornwall) played 46 minutes in his first collegiate start.
Eastern hosts Muhlenberg College Saturday at 1 p.m. in a non-conference match.
