WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Junior forward Mairead Hynes scored eight of her 16 points in a decisive third quarter on 4-of-4 shooting that powered the Connecticut College women's basketball team to a 72-59 non-conference win over Eastern Connecticut State University that ended the Warriors' six-game winning streak Tuesday evening at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

Hynes, who finished the evening seven points shy of 1,000 in her career, sparked Conn (14-6) to a 25-14 advantage in the third quarter that allowed the visitors to carry an 18-point, 58-40 advantage into the final ten minutes.

The Camels, who defeated Eastern (13-6) for the first time in the last four meetings, broke the sixth and final tie of the game by scoring seven straight points in the second period. Hynes and freshman guard Ashley Howe each sank two free throws to kick off the modest, but decisive burst, and sophomore guard Kylie Caouette nailed a three-pointer off a pass from freshman guard Samantha Ashton  to cap the run and give the Camels a 29-22 lead with three minutes left before the half.

Leading by seven, 33-26, at the half, Conn pushed the lead to 14, 40-26,  when Caouette drilled her second of two three-pointers and Hynes scored inside twice less than three minutes into the second half.

Senior guard Liz Malman  led all  players with 18 points for Conn, Hynes finishing with 16 on 7-of-9 field goal shooting and four blocked shots Caouette 12. Hynes shared game-high rebounding honors with eight. The Camels converted 11 of 13 free throws while Eastern missed ten of 21.

Eastern shot 45.1 percent from the floor but 22 turnovers limited its shot total to 51 -- ten less than Conn.

Making her first career start in place of sophomore forward Kelsey Santagata (Stamford) – the team's second-leading scorer and rebounder -- freshman forward Mya Villard (Cromwell) led Eastern with 12 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Jordyn Nappi (Southington) and senior center Lexis Foster (Groton) each had eight points and senior guard Julia DePoi (Brookfield) seven points and seven rebounds.

Nappi tossed in six of her points in the first quarter but took limited shots thereafter, going 1-of-5.  Foster, shooting over 50 percent on the season, failed on nine of 11 field goals but had four rebounds and four assists. Ranked second nationally in blocks (4.28), Foster collected five.

The loss for Eastern was its first since January 9 and was its first at home since a 57-49 decision to No. 1 nationally-ranked Tufts University Jan. 2 and only second in ten contests at Geissler Gym this year.

Eastern visits Western New England University in a non-conference game Thursday at 7 p.m.
