Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Nine different players contributed a goal or assist as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team opened its season with a road victory for the first time in 13 years with a 14-3 non-conference victory over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Saturday morning at Cadet Memorial Field.
Senior midfielder Paige Schneider (East Lyme), junior attack Katie Burke (South Windsor) and sophomore attack Michelina Pinto (Groton) each had four points as Eastern defeated Coast Guard (0-1) for the third straight season, winning a season-opening road contest for the first time since downing Babson College, 10-5, in 2004 at Babson Park, MA. Coast Guard is a third-year program.
Last year's Little East Conference Midfielder-of-the-Year, Schneider had four goals which gives her 124 in her career and moves her into the all-time Top 10 in that category. Last season's LEC Rookie-of-the-Year, Pinto had three goals and an assist. Burke, last year's assist leader, totaled a goal and three assists.
The Warriors held the Bears 22 minutes between first-half goals to move out to a 6-2 lead, then recorded the first seven goals of the second half. Eastern finished with a 30-7 advantage in shots, was successful on all 15 of its clear attempts and won 15 of 19 draws.
Senior defender Devyne Doran (South Kingstown, RI), last year's LEC Defensive Player-of-the-Year, won four draws and Schneider three, the pair combining for five ground balls. Three freshman scored in their collegiate debut: starting midfielder Alyssa Forssell (Center Moriches, NY) and attacks Madison Renaud (Somers) and Alyssa Powers (Ellington). Renaud scored twice and Forssell and Powers once each. Powers gave Eastern a 5-1 lead with her first career strike with ten minutes left in the first half; Forssell opened the second half with a goal less than three minutes into action; and Renaud connected on the first of two goals in a span of less than three minutes midway through the second half.
Becoming the fourth goalie in program history to appear in and start as many as 50 career games, senior Taylor Emmerson (Colchester) made four saves.
Eastern visits Springfield College in a non-conference match Saturday at noon.
