Baseball: Warriors, Beacons Exchange 15-Run, 16-Hit Attacks in Little East Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BOSTON – Junior first baseman D.J. Scavone (Auburn, MA) had four hits – including the 100th of his three-year career – and Eastern Connecticut State University and the University of Massachusetts Boston exchanged 15-run, 16-hit games as the teams split a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Monan Park.

Sophomore leftfielder Alexander White (West Hartford) reached base five times with three hits – including his second home run of the year – and  five players drove in two or more runs in a 16-hit attack as Eastern (12-9, 2-4 LEC) snapped a three-game conference losing streak with a 15-7 first-game win.

In the nightcap, UMass Boston (16-8, 4-2 LEC) countered with a 16-hit attack against five Eastern pitchers as the Beacons scored five runs in the first three innings and ten in the last three in a 15-5 victory stopped in the eighth inning due to the ten-run rule.

The doubleheader featured last year's LEC regular-season co-champion in UMass Boston and the 2016 LEC tournament champion Eastern, which annexed its second tournament title in three years, this one on UMass Boston's home field.

Scavone reached the 100-hit plateau with the first of four hits on the day, an infield single with one out in the fifth inning. Scavone, who has now reached base in his last 16 games, drove in two runs in the first game with a double and launched his second home run of the season – a leadoff blast in the seventh inning of the second game.

On the day, White and sophomore DH Alex Parkos (Meriden) joined Scavone with four hits each, White reaching base seven times with four hits and three walks.  Parkos doubled twice and triple and White and Scavone doubled and tripled. Senior All-America centerfielder Alex Zachary (Enfield) launched the 12th home run in his two-year Eastern career – a two-run shot in the fourth inning of the second game.

Sophomore righty Jordan Muchin (West Hartford) and sophomore lefty Nick Rascati (Wallingford) combined for the opening win on the mound, each striking out five. Muchin (3-2) tossed the first six innings and left with a 12-5 lead while Rascati was credited with a three-inning save, his third save of the season in a team-high 15 appearances. The pair combined to allow nine hits and walk six.

Seven Eastern pitchers combined to give up 25 hits (11 for extra bases) and 20 earned runs while fanning 12 and walking 12.

Eastern visits Western Connecticut State University in a Little East conference game Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
