Women's Basketball: Barry, Villard Bring the Heat in Miami as Warriors Overwhelm Cold-Shooting Washington College For Fifth Straight Victory Away From Geissler

Box Score

MIAMI SHORES – While most everyone on the floor for both teams was ice cold, Eastern Connecticut State University sophomore forward Anna Barry (Andover) and senior forward Mya Villard (Cromwell) were not, and because of that, the Warriors routed Washington College, 53-31, in a non-conference game Monday at Barry University.

Still unbeaten (5-0) away from Geissler Gymnasium this year, Eastern (5-2) was never headed after four players combined to score the first ten points of the game. Washington (6-4) narrowed the gap to six points twice later in the first quarter but an 18-7 run in the second quarter pushed Eastern into a comfortable 17-point, 30-13 lead by the half.

The point total was the lowest by an Eastern opponent  since the Warriors crushed Keene State College, 51-30, in the semifinals of the 2015 Little East Conference tournament at Geissler Gym en route to the title. The meeting was the first between the programs.

While the Shorewomen shot 15.2 percent from the floor in the game (4-of-21 from distance), Eastern -- with the exception of Barry and Villard -- fared only marginally better, at 18.8 percent.

Barry and Villard combined for 12-of-15 from the floor. Barry converted all six of her field goal tries and recorded her second double-double of the year with a game-high 13 rebounds to finish with 12 points in 27 minutes, while Villard was 6-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the foul line for a game-high 15 points in 28 minutes.

In part due to 20 Eastern turnovers, Washington had 19 more field goal attempts, but was still outscored from the floor by 14 points. The Shorewomen never scored more than ten points in a quarter, with 1-of-17 field goal misery in the second quarter sinking any chance of overturning a six-point deficit after one quarter.

Sophomore guard Jenna Serrantino (Cromwell) and freshman forward Mariah Dunn (Meriden) each added seven points and six rebounds off the bench. Barry also swatted two shots to give her 24 this year and 64 in 35 career games (1.83 per game).

Fourteen of Eastern's 16 roster players saw action, with all but two contributing a point or rebound.

Eastern faces Delaware Valley University (1-7) for the first time in the series Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Immaculata-LaSalle High School in Miami.
