Women's Basketball: Rhode Island Builds 20-Point Lead, Wins Battle of Unbeatens

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – In a battle of the remaining unbeaten Little East Conference women's basketball teams in the Little East Conference sporting long winning streaks, Rhode Island College outscored Eastern Connecticut State University 20-6 in the second quarter on the way to a 58-46 victory Wednesday afternoon at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

The win is the 11th straight for Rhode Island (14-1, 7-0 LEC) and stops a seven-game losing streak at the hands of Eastern (12-3, 5-1 LEC), which had an eight-game winning streak halted.

Six-foot sophomore Willcia McBorrough  had six points, five rebounds and two assists in the second quarter, when the Anchorwomen forced Eastern into 2-of-12 shooting from the floor and five turnovers in moving out to an 18-point, 34-16 lead. The RIC lead crested at 20 points midway through the fourth quarter and the Warriors were never able to slice the lead to single digits.

Junior Sophia Guerrier led Rhode Island with 18 points andd also grabbed seven rebounds. McBorrough converted seven of nine field goals and amassed a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and also blocked two shots.Senior Fataya Larry added eight points on 4-of-4 shooting, and grabbed nine rebounds.

The Warriors finished with their third-lowest shooting percentage (31.0) of the year and were outrebounded by 11 – their largest negative margin this year -- as the Anchorwomen ruled the paint with a +30 point differential. The visitors struggled behind the arc (4-of-21) but canned 57.9 percent of their attempts inside the three-point line.

Eastern entered the contest averaging nearly 70 points a game.

Senior Mya Villard (Cromwell) led Eastern with 12 points and shared team-high rebounding honors with six. Sophomore Anna Barry (Andover), shooting 53.2 percent from the floor entering the game, was limited to 4-of-15 and nine points. She also had six rebounds as did senior Lizzy Cretella (Cheshire).

Eastern remains in conference play Saturday at the University of Southern Maine at 1 p.m.
