NEW LONDON, CT – Looking to snap a five-game losing streak in the all-time series versus Connecticut College (6-1-1) which dates back to 2016, Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer (4-5-1) traveled to New London to face off against the Camels. The last time the Warriors defeated Connecticut College was in 2015 at Rick McCarthy Field on a header by Emily Becher that led to a 1-0 win for Eastern.
Coming into Wednesday, the Warriors also dropped their last five matches on the road against the Camels with the last win coming in the form of a 4-3 overtime victory in 2005. However, the streak would continue as Eastern fell to Connecticut College by a final score of 3-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Wallace (Smithtown, NY) made her second career start for Eastern and held her own against the 6
th-ranked team in the New England Region 1 poll. Wallace made one save in just over 16 minutes of action when she swallowed up a shot taken by first-year defender Lexi Gudatis on the left side of the goal in the latter part of the 14
th minute.
Wallace would be relieved in net by senior goalkeeper
Alexis Tyrrell (Torrington) who played the final 28:23 of the first half. While the Warriors had a chance in the 17
th minute to take the lead on a shot taken by first-year forward
Briley Harnois (Attleboro, MA) that went wide left, it would be the Camels that would strike first which would prove to be enough in the match. After Tyrrell made a save on the first shot she faced in relief of Wallace, senior forward Kat Norton would hit junior midfielder Jackie Puda with a pass that resulted in a goal just under 22 minutes in the match to give Connecticut College the 1-0 lead.
Eastern looked to respond in the 25
th minute on a corner kick, but first-year defender
Daria DiBiasio's (Richmond, RI) shot went out to the left which neutralized the offensive chance. After her two-goal performance against Keene State on Saturday, sophomore midfielder
Alexie Root (Old Saybrook) had a chance to knot the score up at one at 29:44, but her shot was covered up by sophomore goalkeeper Nici Scola. Despite being outshot 10-5 (5-1 in shots on goal), the Warriors only trailed by one heading into halftime.
In the second half, Eastern would trot out sophomore goalkeeper
Rachel Hughes (Columbia) for the final 45 minutes of action. This would be Hughes first appearance in a Warrior uniform for the 2021-2022 women's soccer season and she would make one save on the three shots she faced from the Camels.
Goals by sophomore forward Jamie Scarpantino and junior forward Mya Johnson in the 57
th and 74
th minute respectively would make the margin too great for the Warriors to overcome as they dropped their sixth straight match to Connecticut College, 3-0.
Sophomore forward
Ashlyn Rogers (Portsmouth, RI) made her first start of the season for the Warriors. Coming into the game, Rogers had appeared in eight games off the bench this year for Eastern, scoring one goal against Westfield State University on September 22
nd.
First-year forward
Mia Hwang (Manchester) made her fourth appearance of this season, playing in 21 minutes which is tied for the second-most minutes she has played in a match during her young Warrior's career.
First-year midfielder
Mackenzie Teper (Lisbon), first-year defender
Madison Palmer (Storrs), and first-year defender
Emma Blanchette (Shelton) saw their first action since starting against Mitchell College back on September 19
th. Teper appeared for 7 minutes in the closing moments of the second half, Palmer playing the final 16 minutes of the match, and Blanchette seeing 26 minutes of playing time for Eastern.
The Warriors will now travel to Vermont and face off against Castleton University in a Little East Conference match on Saturday at a 1:00 PM scheduled start time. Eastern is 2-2 all-time against the Spartans, dropping their last matchup at Rick McCarthy Field on April 30
th by a final score of 1-0.
