Julie Keckler (Trumbull) had 22 points and a career-high ten rebounds and the Eastern Connecticut State University women's basketball team held Baruch College to under 30 percent shooting from the floor as the Warriors won their first game of the year with a 96-40 non-conference victory in the consolation game of the Kean University Classic Saturday afternoon at Hardwood Arena.
After losing twice in the first three days of the season, Eastern (1-2) had no trouble posting its first win after defeating Baruch (1-2) for the third time without a loss in the all-time series. The teams were meeting for the first time in the regular season.
Eastern outrebounded Baruch, 52-28, outscoring it 66-6 in the paint and forced 23 turnovers to a 35-9 scoring advantage off miscues.
Thirteen players saw substantial action for the Warriors, with six-foot senior post player
Anna Barry (Andover) following Keckler with 18 points (7-for-9 FGs) and two blocks.
Eight players connected on at least half of their field goals, leading to a team shooting percentage of 52.1. Barry, Keckler and junior guard
Jaclyn Santella (Hebron) combined to sink 12 of 13 free throws.
First-year guards
Emma Simmons (Carver, MA) and
Elayna Comella (Warwick, RI) each recorded their first collegiate points. Simmons had eight points in 11 minutes, hitting both of her three-point field goals and both of her free throws. Comella sank a free throw, grabbed three rebounds and had four assists and three steals in 12 minutes.
Keckler represented Eastern on the all-tournament team with two-game totals of 47 points, 15 rebounds, four steals and three assists. She was 14-for-26 from the floor, 2-for-8 from three-point and 6-for-8 from the foul line.
Eastern opens at home Nov. 20 against Trinity College at 3 p.m.
