Brooke Matyasvosky (Orange) was 4-for-4 in the first game and pitched her first complete game in the nightcap as the No. 15 nationally-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University softball team swept Plymouth State University, 12-4 in six innings and 4-0 in the Little East Conference openers Saturday afternoon at Clyde Washburne Field.
Off to its first 10-0 start in the program's 45-year history, Eastern completed a four-game sweep this week of Plymouth (0-4).
In the first game, Matyasovsky had a double, scored three runs and drove in two as one of four multi-hit batters that highlighted a 17-hit attack, junior
Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and junior
Carley Stoker (Sandy Creek, NY) pitched a complete-game six-hitter with six strikeouts for her sixth win in as many decisions and her fifth complete game in five starts. Stoker has a season-opening scoreless streak of 31 2/3 innings halted when the Panthers scored three times on three hits, with freshman Vanessa Bryan's (Stoneham) one-out, two-run triple accounting for the first two runs.
Matyasovsky pitched a three-hitter to complete the sweep, with graduate leadoff hitter
Cassie Woods (Mystic) driving in two runs. Woods and junior
Carolyn Biel (Wallingford) each had two hits in the second game.
Eastern pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first inning of the first game after there were two out and none on, with senior
Megan Hodgdon (Cheshire) belting a bases-clearing double and freshman
Sarah Remillard (Grafton, MA) driving in the final run with an opposite-field single to right.
After Plymouth reached Stoker for three runs in the third, the Warriors responded with four more in the bottom of the inning on five hits on RBI safeties by Stoker (double), Matyasovsky, SanGiovanni and junior
Laura Zenk (Hermon, ME).
Senior
Alexis Tyrrell (Torrington) had two hits and scored twice in the first game and added an RBI single in the second game to give her 97 career hits.
Eastern remains in conference play Friday when it host Massachusetts Dartmouth in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
