Women's Volleyball: Warriors Sweep Anchorwomen to Move to 2-0 in LEC

Eastern claims tenth straight in series

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Anna Barry (Andover) led both teams with 14 kills and a .462 attack percentage and  sophomore Paula Perez (Caguas, P.R.) contributed ten digs and three service aces as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team swept Rhode Island College, 25-13, 25-21, 25-20 in a Little East conference match Thursday evening at the Murray Center.
 
The win is the tenth straight for Eastern (2-0, 2-0 LEC) over Rhode Island (0-2, 0-2 LEC).
 
Senior Abby Stern (Manchester) added 12 kills and five digs, senior Alaetra Long (Lincoln, NE) nine digs, junior setter Meg Verizzi (Lebanon) 29 assists and freshman Paula Victoria Hernandez Aulet (Manti, P.R.) eight digs, two service aces and nine assists.
 
As a team, Eastern committed only three reception errors.
 
In a back-and-forth third set, Eastern broke from a 14-all tie to outscore the Anchorwomen 11-6 down the stretch. Leading 20-18, the Warriors put together a decisive four-point run to move to within match point.  Sophomore Nayeli Cruz Martinez (Toa Baja, P.R.) got it going with a kill, Barry and senior Lauren Notholt (Milford) recorded the team's only two block assists, and junior Madison Bell (Salem) delivered consecutive service aces to make it 24-18. Notholt's fifth and final kills set up by Bell's assist clinched the win.
 
Eastern hosts Massachusetts Dartmouth April 18 at 1 p.m. in an LEC match.
