Softball: Warriors Sweep Western Connecticut in Tuneup for Friday's Battle With Fellow Little East Conference Unbeaten Southern Maine

DANBURY, Conn. – Senior Alexis Tyrrell (Torrington) had five hits and scored five runs as the Eastern Connecticut State University softball team kept pace as one of two unbeatens in the Little East Conference with 10-4, 19-7 wins over Western Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon at Westside Field. The second game was stopped after five innings.

The winningest unbeaten team in the national Top 25, fifth-ranked Eastern (20-0, 8-0 LEC) had 27 hits – nine good for extra bases – and got complete-game pitching from junior righties Carley Stoker (Sandy Creek, NY) and Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange) for its tenth and 11th wins over Western (2-10, 2-6 LEC) in the last 13 games in the series. Each pitcher is now 10-0 on the season.

With the wins, the Warriors are halfway to the program record of 40 straight victories, set during a 44-3 season in 2012.

Tyrell, Matyasovsky and junior third baseman Carolyn Biel (Wallingford) all homered, with Tyrrell and Matyasovsky also doubling. The homer was the eighth of the season and 18th in the 69-game career of Matyasovsky, ranked fifth all-time in that category, one behind former All-America shortstop Alyssa Hancock '16.

Graduate centerfielder leadoff hitter Cassie Woods (Mystic) had an 18-game hitting streak ended when she walked in the first game, but she extended her on-base streak to 20 in the nightcap by going 4-for-4 with a double, four runs scored and two RBI. She scored six runs on the day.
Batting ninth in the second game, sophomore Alyssa Vilchez (Brampton, Ont.) reached four times with a double, two singles and a walk, scored three times and drove in two runs.

With a hit in each game, junior shortstop Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) extended her on-base streak to 19 games.

Conference unbeatens Eastern and the University of Southern Maine square off Friday in a 2:30 doubleheader at Gorham, ME. The Huskies (22-1-1), also 8-0 in the LEC, bring a 12-game winning streak into the doubleheader after sweeping Plymouth State University, 6-5, 8-0, Tuesday at home.
