Field Hockey: Warriors Roll Past New England College, Now 4-0 on Year

Eastern loses shutout in final minute

MANSFIELD, Conn. –  Four players contributed one goal in each quarter as the Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team closed out its home season with a 4-1 non-conference victory over New England College Thursday afternoon at Rick McCarthy Field.

Freshman Isabel Sanchez (Weston) got Eastern (4-0) on the board less than a minute into play with her third goal of the year and the Warriors added single goals in the next three periods before New England (0-3) sophomore Alivia Proulx ruined the team's hope for a first shutout of the year when she connected off sophomore Lilli McCormack's penalty corner inside the final minute.

The win is the first for Eastern over New England in this seven-game series, the teams meeting for the first time since the Pilgrim's 5-0 victory 14 seasons ago.

Sophomore defender Grace Mangiameli (above) helped senior goalie
Keira Integlia post 53 scoreless minutes in the final home match
of her three-year career.
The Warriors carried their 1-0 lead into the last five minutes of the first half, when junior Corey Callahan (South Windsor) sent a penalty stroke inside the left post awarded when the visitors were whistled for a goalie violation.

Senior Julia Koonjy (Jefferson, NJ) found the back of the cage five minutes into the second half on a close shot from the right side to make it 3-0 before team junior scoring leader Brianna Nolan (Watertown) potted her sixth goal of the year near the left post on a rebound of a shot saved by New England sophomore goalie Ellie Philben off the stick of Eastern senior Mary Greenwell (Warwick, RI).

Eastern senior goalie Keira Integlia (Branford) did not allow a goal in 53 minutes to earn her 14th career win and lower this year's goals-against average to 1.01. Integlia made two save and got support from sophomore defenders Grace Mangiameli (Suffield) and Alyson Sanford (Waterford) and freshman Arianna Ricciardi (Wallingford) and from junior Katelyn Miller (Wallingford) off the bench.

Integlia protected Eastern's early one-goal lead when she knocked down New England sophomore Mikayla Vincent's high back-handed bid late in the first quarter.

Down 2-0 after Callahan's penalty stroke, the Pilgrims appeared to cut the deficit in half when McCormack reached high to knock freshman Aviara Chillinor's drive into the cage off of a penalty corner, but the score was nullified when Chillinor's shot was ruled in violation of the 18-inch shot maximum height allowed on the first shot off a penalty corner.

Philben made eight saves for the Pilgrims, five coming when Eastern pressed with an 8-1 shot advantage in the third quarter, the goalie stopping bids by Callahan and Koonjy. Two dangerous crossing passes from junior Sydney Collentine (New Fairfield) two minutes apart did not result in a goal in that period, with one carrying untouched through the goal mouth and the second saved by Philben on Koonjy's shot. Koonjy followed 30 seconds after the save, however, with the goal that made it 3-0 early in the period.

The match was the final one at home in the careers of seniors Integlia, Greenwell and Koonjy.

Already off to its best start in program history, Eastern closes the season with road games Sunday at Western New England University and May 1 at Roger Williams University, both at 11 a.m.
