It's First Things First For Women's Soccer Against First-Time Foe

NEW LONDON, Conn. – It was a contest full of firsts for the Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon in a 2-0 non-conference victory over Mitchell College at Alumni Field.

In the first match ever between the programs, eight Eastern (3-2-0) players made their first career starts, and the three other starters opened the game in the starting lineup for the first time this year as Eastern won its first road match of the year in handing Mitchell (2-3-1) its first loss in the last four contests.

In addition, sophomore keeper Emily Wallace (Smithtown, NY) shared her first shutout with first-year teammate Sara Honold (Wantage, NJ), who gained a piece of the shutout in her first career appearance.

With Eastern leading, 1-0 behind first-year midfielder Briley Harnois's (Attleboro, MA) second goal in the last 24 hours in the 13th minute, sophomore midfielder Alexie Root (Old Saybrook) scored her first goal of the season in her first appearance of the year after returning from injury. In the match, first-year forward Paula Caro (Carolina, P.R.) and first-year defender Morgan Kelly (Florida, NY) each recorded their first career points with assists.

Coming off Saturday's 2-1 Little East Conference home loss to UMass Boston, Eastern outshot the Mariners, 33-0, did not allow a corner kick, and required Mitchell freshman keeper Gemma Landry to make 11 saves in order to keep her team within striking distance.

Eastern hosts Westfield State University in a 6 p.m. non-conference match Wednesday at Rick McCarthy Field before facing three Little East Conference opponents in a span of eight days. The Warriors are 3-0-2 against Westfield in the last five meetings, with the teams having last met in 2017.
