Women's Soccer: Warriors and Huskies Battle to Tie in Little East Conference Match

Warriors have not dropped a match to Huskies in 21 seasons

GORHAM, ME – Looking to get back in the win column, Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer (3-3-1, 0-1-1 LEC) traveled to Gorham, Maine for a Little East Conference matchup against the University of Southern Maine (5-1-2, 0-1-1 LEC) and played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime at Hannaford Field.

The Warriors looked to get on the board early when senior forward Carlie Dreyfus (Stafford Springs) was turned away by sophomore goalkeeper Bre Atwood in the 5th minute. It would take until the 16th minute for the Huskies to record their first shot of the match when sophomore midfielder Katherine Clancy fired high on senior goalkeeper Alexis Tyrrell (Torrington) in net for Eastern.

Senior forward Haley Montesanto (East Haven) would put the Warriors on the board first in the 18th minute of the match when senior midfielder Sierra DeCarli (Tolland) found her between a pair of Southern Maine defenders and Montesanto lifted the ball over Atwood's head into the left side of the net. The goal was Montesanto's fourth of the season and eighth of her four-year career at Eastern.

The back and forth affair between the Little East Conference rivals would head into the halftime break with the Warriors leading 1-0. In the first half, Eastern outshot the Huskies 4-2 (2-0 shots on goal) and had the only two corner kicks that were awarded during the first 45 minutes of action.

In the 53rd minute, Southern Maine would respond when senior forward Ciera Berthiaume's corner kick found first-year defender Kiki Huntress for her first intercollegiate goal to knot the game at one. The Huskies would continue to apply pressure in an effort to take the lead, but Tyrrell stood tall in goal for the Warriors.

Southern Maine's best chance to go ahead in regulation came in the 73rd minute when sophomore defender Mia Sargent fired a direct kick on net that Tyrrell turned away with a diving save to keep the match even at one.

The overtime frames were a stalemate with both teams recording three shots across both 10-minute periods. The best chance for either team to score came from Berthiaume in the 97th minute of the match as her shot sailed off the crossbar. Neither team would have another opportunity to score and the match would end in a 1-1 tie.

Alexis Tyrrell recorded 5 saves on 6 shots for the Warriors, lowering her goals against average to 1.89 and raising her save percentage to .833 on the season.

Junior defender Emily Barata (New Fairfield) played a career-high 110 minutes surpassing her previous career high of 109 minutes played versus Plymouth State on November 2nd, 2019. In playing 110 minutes, Barata has also surpassed 2,000 minutes played in her three years at Eastern.

The tie results in Eastern extending their streak to 21 seasons without a loss to Southern Maine in women's soccer, their last loss was a 2-1 decision in the Little East Conference tournament.

The Warriors return home to Rick McCarthy Field to take on Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference matchup on Wednesday, September 29th at 6:00 PM. To start the year, WestConn has been led to an 8-0-0 record by junior forward Myah Croze who has recorded 13 goals in 8 games which ties her for second-most in Division III women's soccer. The last time the two teams faced off was on October 16th, 2019 when Western defeated Eastern 2-1 at Rick McCarthy Field.
