WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- First-year forward
Katelyn Herbert (Bethpage, NY) scored midway through the first half and junior midfielder
Lindsay Fishman (South Windsor) converted her first goal of the year in the final minutes to lift the Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 2-0 Little East Conference victory over Keene State College Saturday afternoon at Rick McCarthy Field.
Â
The victory for Eastern (4-3-2, 2-2-0 LEC) snaps a two-game losing streak and is the first win at home after two losses for the Warriors under first-year head coach
Sarah Tompkins. Playing its ninth road game, Keene (5-5-1, 1-2-0 LEC) was coming off its first LEC win, a 4-1 decision in its second home game against Plymouth State University on Wednesday.
Â
The win is also the fourth straight at home for the Warriors against Keene and third straight win overall, following a pair of one-goal decisions each of the last two years.
Â
Herbert capitalized on a misplay by Keene freshman goalkeeper Riley Andriski (Newmarket, NH) to score her third goal of the year in the 26
th minute, and Fishman launched a high shot under the crossbar from the middle of the box for her first goal of the season inside the final two minutes.
Â
On Herbert's goal, Eastern played the ball out of the back to sophomore
Briley Harnois (Attleboro, MA) on the left flank. Harnois was able to keep the ball in play and split two defenders in cutting into the box, where her deflected pass carried to Andriski, who fumbled the loose ball which landed at the feet of an unmarked Herbert at the left post. With Andriski down, Harnois hammered her only shot of the game between two players defending the goal line.
Â
With time running out in the game, Eastern sophomore
Daria DiBiasio (Richmond, RI) attempted three consecutive throw-ins in front of the Eastern bench. Eastern was able to dig the third one out of the corner and sophomore
Dani Rovalino (Simsbury), despite being hemmed in by two Keene defenders, connected on a short pass to Fishman, who took two touches and launched the ball over a flat-footed Andriski and under the crossbar on her only shot of the game. The assist was the fifth in the career of Rovalino, but her first of the season.
Â
Junior keeper
Rachel Hughes (Columbia) faced only one shot over the first 70 minutes in recording her first win of the season after two losses. Making her first relief appearance of the season after six starts, junior
Emily Wallace (Smithtown, NY) closed it out over the final 20 minutes.
Â
Keene's shot came in the first five minutes of a scoreless game and was a breakaway by senior Amanda Marshall (Bow, NH) from 40 yards that Hughes denied.
Â
Leading by one late in the first half, Harnois made a bid that was knocked off the end line by Andriski. Rovalino's corner kick went to DiBiasio, whose shot was saved by the goalkeeper. With Eastern's one-goal lead holding up, Eastern junior
Jillian Parenteau (West Greenwich, RI) drove her breakaway shot right at Andriski, who made one of her eight saves.
