PROVIDENCE, R.I. – There is no truth to the rumor that Eastern Connecticut State University junior guard
Meikyle Murray (Bronx, NY) owns Rhode Island College's home basketball court – the Murray Center. But in this year's two-game Little East Conference regular-season series, he has surely owned the Anchormen.
The first-year transfer scored over 30 points for the second time in two games this year against Rhode Island College that powered the Warriors to their eighth win in the last 11 games, 91-72, Wednesday evening at the Murray Center.
Rhode Island (12-9, 5-8 LEC) has given up more than 90 points three times during its current four-game losing streak. Eastern's (14-7, 9-4 LEC) final point total represents its first 90-point game of the season.
Following its fifth regular-season sweep of RIC in the last eight years, Eastern inches within a half-game of Keene State College (10-4 LEC) with three games remaining in the LEC regular season. Keene was edged by LEC leader Massachusetts Dartmouth, 84-81, Wednesday night. The Warriors are in third place, a half-game ahead of Plymouth State University (8-5), which kept pace with a 72-70 LEC win at the University of Southern Maine Wednesday.
The top four teams in the final standings host first-round LEC tournament games Feb. 22.
Murray, who tossed in 31 points in his second game in an Eastern uniform in an 80-69 home win over RIC Jan. 17, followed two single-digit games last week with career-highs of 32 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists Wednesday. In playing all 80 minutes in two games against RIC, Murray has a combined 63 points on 25-of-38 field goal shooting (65.8 pct.), 25 rebounds, 13 assists and four blocks.
The Warriors shot a season-best 57.9 percent from the floor and were 13-of-19 from the foul line and canned 12 of 23 three-pointers and limited the Anchormen to 28 first-half points in building a 12-point halftime lead.
Murray was 13-of-20 from the floor (4-of-6 from distance) and sank both free throw attempts and blocked two of the team's seven shots. Senior guard
Tyreice Woods (Hartford) was the second of the team's four double-digit scorers. He had 19 points (7-of-11 FG), five rebounds and two blocks, while senior guard
Thomas Close (East Hampton) added 15 points and junior forward
Rakeesh Tibby (East Hartford) came off the bench for 12 points. Sophomore point guard
Max Lee (Norwich), who has the second-highest assist average (6.9) in a season in program history and the second-best mark in the conference, had his fourth double-digit game with 12 assists. Lee leads the LEC with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.2-to-1.
Shion Darby, tops in the LEC in scoring (22.2 ppg.), followed Murray with 31 points for the Anchormen – producing his sixth 30-plus point game this year -- with Ousmane Kourouma grabbing ten rebounds.
Eastern and the University of Southern Maine have their home-and-home series three days apart, squaring off at Geissler Gymnasium Saturday at 3 p.m. and again at USM's Warren Hill Gymnasium Monday at 7 p.m.
