Women's Soccer: Warriors Extend Shutout Streak, Down Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Junior goalkeeper Emily Wallace (Smithtown, NY) extended her scoreless streak to 239 minutes and the Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer team scored twice in a span of seven minutes to break the game open in the second half in a 3-0 non-conference victory over Westfield State University Wednesday night at Alumni Field.

Still unbeaten (3-0-2) on the road this year, Eastern (3-1-2) improved to 4-1-2 in the last seven matches against Westfield (4-2-1) after posting its third straight shutout this year.

Wallace (3-1-2) has not given up a goal since a 3-0 loss at home 11 days ago. Since then, she has shut out Trinity in a tie and Massachusetts Boston, 1-0, in the Little East Conference opener on the road Saturday.

Wallace made four saves and left at halftime with a 1-0 lead before junior Rachel Hughes (Columbia) came on to make nine saves in the final 45 minutes.

After junior Alexie Root (Old Saybrook) gave Eastern the lead with her second goal in the eighth minute that stood through the first half, junior Ashlyn Rogers (Portsmouth, RI) and sophomore Briley Harnois (Attleboro, MA) scored seven minutes apart early in the second half. Sophomore Daria DiBiasio (Richmond, RI) gained her first career point with an assist on Root's goal.

Eastern (1-0-0 LEC) returns to conference play Saturday, hosting the University of Southern Maine at Rick McCarthy Field at 1 p.m.

Eastern holds a 31-4-3 advantage in the all-time series with Southern Maine but was eliminated by the Huskies, 2-0, in the first round of the LEC playoffs last year at McCarthy Field, ending a 21-game (20-0-1) unbeaten streak against the Huskies.
