BRISTOL, R.I. -- Five Tufts University players attacked at .400 or better in a three-set non-conference sweep of Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday evening at Paolino Recreation Center on the campus of Roger Williams University. Scores were 25-16, 25-18, 25-13.
Ranked No. 16 nationally after reaching last year's NCAA Elite Eight (defeating No.1 nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins in the regional final), Tufts attacked at .411 as a team and collected 14 blocks that led, in part, to Eastern's (2-2) attack percentage of .022.
In their season-opener, the Jumbos needed a final 10-1 run to pull away from a tight first set, used an early 9-1 run to move out to a 10-4 lead after the Warriors scored the first three points of the second set, and attacked at .591 to ease to the third-set win after scoring the first seven points.
Five-foot-11 inch junior Rileigh Farragher had 11 kills and a .474 attack percentage for Tufts, which narrowed Eastern's all-time series lead to 5-4 with its fourth straight win over the Warriors in the first meeting between the programs in 18 years. Grace Legris, a 5-foot-11 inch middle, totaled seven blocks for Tufts and junior Christine Audette had nine digs.
