Softball: SanGiovanni Drives in Six, Continues Assault on Recordbook

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior righty Carley Stoker (Sandy Creek, NY) pitched a complete-game two-hitter in the opener for her 30th career win and came on to record the final five outs for her third save of the season in the nightcap and senior third baseman Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) drove in six of the team's seven runs as the streaking Eastern Connecticut State University softball team extended its winning streak to ten with 5-0, 2-0 non-conference shutouts of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Wednesday afternoon at Nitchman Field.

In the first game, senior righty Alyssa Vilchez (Brampton, ON) pitched into the sixth inning to earn her eighth win in ten decisions and Stoker (9-1) preserved the win by getting an infield pop and strikeout to leave the bases loaded in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh.

It marks the first back-to-back shutouts this year for Eastern (18-8), which has swept three doubleheaders in the last five days. Under the direction of former Eastern All-America third baseman Arielle Cooper, Coast Guard (21-7) had won ten of 12 at home prior to Wednesday.

SanGiovanni and Vilchez both had three hits on the day, with SanGiovanni driving in six of the team's runs with a fifth-inning grand slam in the first game – the 21st homer of her career, with her first-inning single and sixth-inning sacrifice fly accounting for both of the team's runs in the second game.

Through 158 career games, SanGiovanni ranks seventh all-time in batting average (.390), third in doubles (44),  tied for fourth in home runs and extra-base hits (65),  fifth in RBI (122), sixth in total bases (276), seventh in slugging (.637), tenth in hits (169) and first (by a wide margin) in hit-by-pitch (63).

Eastern hosts the University of Massachusetts Boston Saturday in a 1 p.m. Little East Conference doubleheader at Clyde Washburne Field.
