Eastern celebrates the first career goal of junior transfer Olivia Mullings that pushed the Warriors into a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Eastern went on to a 3-1 victory over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in a non-conference match Monday night.
Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – In would be speculation to think that sophomore
Katelyn Herbert's (Bethpage, NY) first goal of the season in the opening minutes of Eastern Connecticut State University's non-conference match at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's Nitchman Field would guarantee a victory, but it
did, at least, guarantee that the Warriors would avoid a fourth 1-0 loss in four road games this year.
Herbert, last year's second-leading scorer and a third-team All-Little East Conference selection in her first season, converted Eastern's first shot of the match into a goal for Eastern (2-3-0), which went on to snap a two-game losing streak with its first road win (and goal) in four games, 3-1, and sent Coast Guard (1-6) to its sixth straight loss Monday night.
It was also Herbert's goal – her fourth and final one of the season -- in the sixth minute that propelled Eastern to its 4-0 win over Coast Guard in mid-October last year at Rick McCarthy Field.
The win is also Eastern's sixth in a row and seventh in eight games in the series with Coast Guard, which managed to avoid its fourth straight loss by shutout when senior defender Mary Kate Huynh came off the bench to beat Eastern first-year goalie
Kaeden Dublin (Maple Grove, MN) in the 71
st minute.
By the time Huynh put the Bears on the board, however, Eastern was in command of a 3-0 lead, thanks to junior transfer
Olivia Mullings' (Newington) first goal in an Eastern uniform in the 50
th minute and Herbert's second goal of the match 15 minutes later. It was Herbert's second career two-goal game.
Coast Guard outshot Eastern, 19-10, but put only eight of them on goal, forcing Dublin to make seven saves en route to her second win in three decisions.
Coming off its third straight road game Monday, Eastern returns home Wednesday to host Westfield State University in a non-conference match at 6 p.m.
