Taylor Salato (East Haven) and
Nevaeh Clark (Cromwell) combined to sink 20 of 22 free throws and the Eastern Connecticut State University women's basketball team committed a season-low ten turnovers in a 67-62 Little East Conference victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center.
With its fourth straight LEC road win, Eastern (7-11, 5-4 LEC) moves within a game of third-place University of Southern Maine, which dropped a 69-64 home decision to Keene State College Saturday. UMass (4-12, 2- LEC) lost for the eighth time in its last nine games. The Warriors completed the sweep of the Beacons after winning, 62-49 Dec. 2 at Geissler Gymnasium.
Salato was 14-of-15 from the foul line en route to a game-high 27 points while Clark was 6-of-7 from the foul line and finished with a career-high 21 points. Salato had totalled 29 points in the earlier win over UMass Boston.
Trailing by one after three quarters, Eastern converted 12 of 14 free throws and forced six turnovers in the fourth quarter. Salato was 8-of-9 from the stripe over the final ten minutes and tossed in 14 of the team's 26 points, with Clark adding eight.
Returning after missing the last two games with injury,
Kya Mayo (Middletown) equalled her season-high of 13 points that she had in the season-opener. She was 6-of-9 from the floor.
Julia Knowles (Waterford) chipped in a career-high eight assists with only one turnover in 40 minutes, while
Cara McGettigan (Southbury) led both teams with nine rebounds.
Keriann Farina had 12 points as UMB's only double-digit scorer.
Eastern visits the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Wednesday at 5 p.m.
