DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men's soccer team scored 11 minutes apart early in the match and the defense allowed only four shots to reach net as the Warriors moved into a three-way tie for fifth place in the Little East Conference with a 3-1 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on its Senior Day Saturday morning at Cressy Field.
Entering the match in seventh place in the nine-team conference, Eastern (4-7-4, 2-4-1 LEC) jumped into a three-way tie for fifth place by running its unbeaten streak to six (5-0-1) against UMass (2-11-3, 0-5-2) and sending the Corsairs to their fifth straight loss.
The Warriors forged the three-way tie for fifth with VTSU Castleton and Plymouth State University. VTSU Castleton was tied, 0-0, by LEC co-leader University of Massachusetts Boston and Plymouth State University was idle.
The Warriors close out the regular season hosting UMass Boston – ranked sixth in the latest USC Region I poll as the highest-ranked non-NESCAC institution -- Saturday at 4 p.m. The top six seeds qualify for the LEC playoffs, which get underway Nov. 5. Eastern holds the tie-breaker over Plymouth State based upon its 2-1 home win last Saturday but VTSU Castleton has the tie-breaker over the Warriors due to a 1-0 win Oct. 6 at Dave Wolk Stadium.
Against UMass Dartmouth Saturday, seniors
Walter Scudder (Unionville) and
Logan Brennan (Farmington) scored 11 minutes apart as the Warriors jumped to a 2-0 lead just 14 minutes into play, and Scudder made it three goals in his last three games with the dagger four minutes into the second half.
Senior keeper
Nathan Yeich (Willington) made three saves for his third win, but was denied his first shutout in seven weeks when junior Leo Brittes scored his first goal of the year with 40 seconds left. Eastern finished with a 23-10 advantage in shots and limited the Corsairs to one corner kick in the second half.
