Box Score
MANSFIELD, Conn. – Union College junior midfielder Sophia Surber scored her first goal of the season with 80 seconds left in the first half on a 20-yard floater under the crossbar and the goal stood up in the Garnet Chargers' 1-0 non-conference victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Wednesday afternoon at Rick McCarthy Field.
Coming off a Little East Conference home victory over VTSU Castleton when it posted its third 3-0 victory of the year Saturday, Eastern (3-7-2) was shut out at home for the fourth time this year in the loss to Union (6-2-4), which posted its eighth shutout (third straight) and has given up only five goals this year.
In the first meeting between the programs, first-year keeper
Alex Ignatowicz (Coventry) – last week's Little East Conference Rookie-of-the-Week – had the fourth-longest scoreless streak (371 minutes, six seconds) in program history ended by Surber, who received a short pass from sophomore Gillian Paseka near the right touch line, took two touches and floated a 20-yarder over the head of the 5-foot-7 inch Iganatwicz and into the back of the net with 1:20 left in the first half. The scoring play originated on a punt by Ignatowicz which remained in Eastern's end and was eventually controlled by Paseka.
Union outshot Eastern in the first half but the Warriors had several chances to score first. The first came on senior midfielder
Sara Honold's (Wantage, NJ) thru-ball on the right side just three minutes into play to first-year forward
Brooke Bolles (Preston), but junior keeper Rachel Berliner came out to smother the potential attempt. Four minutes later, Berliner came off her line again on first-year midfielder
Glenda Zhiminaicela's (Clinton) crossing pass from the right to gather in the ball before a shot could be taken.
Ignatowicz made three saves in the first half and sophomore
Kaeden Dublin (Maple Grove, MN) one in the second. Berliner (four saves) and first-year keeper Brooke Rosenshine (zero saves over the final 14:27) combined on the shutout. For Ignatowicz (1-3-2), all of her losses have come by 1-0 scores.
Zhiminaicela and senior defender
Olivia Davidson (Waterford) combined to take seven of Eastern's ten shots.
Eastern (1-1-2 LEC) plays two Little East road contests – Wednesday at Western Connecticut and Oct. 19 at Plymouth State University – before returning home Oct. 23 to host Framingham State University in a non-conference match at 4 p.m.
