Men's Basketball: Warriors Conclude Season With First Little East Sweep of Year

Cade Ensinger is escorted by his mother, Bess, and brother, Cole, as he enters Geissler Gym for the final time of his career Saturday on Senior Day.

Eastern closes with first LEC home victory of year

Box Score
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – A disappointing season ended on an uplifting note Saturday afternoon for the Eastern Connecticut State University men's basketball team, which used a 46-point second half to erase a three-point halftime deficit and complete its first Little East Conference sweep of the season with a 73-57 victory over Plymouth State University in the season-finale for both teams at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

While Plymouth (8-17, 4-12 LEC) missed 16 of 19 three-point field goal attempts in the game, Eastern (6-19, 3-13 LEC) recovered from an 0-for-9 first-half showing from behind the arc to sink six of 13 in the second half that keyed its 46-point half. Not only does the victory give the Warriors their first home-and-home LEC sweep this year, it provides the team with a conference home win after seven losses.

Picked for fifth among nine teams in the coaches' pre-season poll, Eastern shares eighth place with VTSU Castleton, which entered the final day of the regular season a game ahead of the Warriors, but lost an 84-60 road decision against the University of Southern Maine in its season-finale. Picked for sixth in the pre-season poll, Plymouth winds up in seventh place, a game ahead of Eastern and two games back of the University of Massachusetts Boston for the sixth and final LEC playoff spot.

First-year guard Esco Greene (New Britain), who was not available to play when the Warriors escaped with a 72-71 overtime win at Plymouth a month ago, made up for lost time by scoring 12 of his career-high 16 points in the second half, with first-year junior Ty Calloway (Enfield) tossing in eight of his ten points after the break and sparking the Warriors to 56 percent shooting from the floor over the final 20 minutes.

Four players combined for the team's six second-half three-pointers. Calloway was 2-for-3 in the second half from distance, and first-year senior Cam Stiepock (Glastonbury) nailed both of his attempts. In the second half, sophomore guard Dominick Dao (Terryville) had six points and eight rebounds, with Calloway adding all five of his rebounds.

Dao followed Greene's lead with 15 points in the game and added a career-high 11 rebounds. Junior forward Sheriff Bilewu (Waterbury) had six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Playing in the final games of his career, senior guard Cade Ensinger (Deep River) had eight points, a career-high seven rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot in 34 minutes before being lifted with 32.1 seconds left.

Senior guard Kyler Bosse, the LEC's second-leading scorer at 19.9 points per game, led all players with 29 points (10-of-22 FG/8-of-11 FT) and shared game-high rebounding honors with 11, but was the only Plymouth player in double figures.
