Box Score
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Plymouth State University women's basketball team outscored Eastern Connecticut State University by ten points in the second quarter that helped wipe out a 13-point first-quarter deficit and the Panthers went on to a 63-55 Little East Conference victory Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium in the regular-season finale for both teams.
While the Plymouth (11-13, 7-9 LEC) victory ended a 23-game losing streak at the hands of Eastern (10-15, 8-8 LEC), top-seeded Rhode Island College's 91-51 road win over Keene State College not only completed an unbeaten conference season for the Anchorwomen, but made moot the outcome of the Eastern-Plymouth game in regards to altering the seedings for the first round of the LEC tournament Tuesday.
Eastern entered the day ranked fourth in the conference standings, Keene State fifth and Plymouth sixth, and the LEC tournament will reflect that. Keene's loss prevents it from gaining the No. 4 seed over Eastern and leaves it in fifth place and gives the Owls a first-round road contest against Eastern at 6 p.m. at Geissler Gym. On the basis of its win over Eastern and Keene's loss to Rhode Island, Plymouth finishes with a share of fifth place in the final standings with Keene but is relegated to the sixth and final seed due to tie-breakers. In the first round, the Panthers will visit third-seeded University of Southern Maine , which ended the regular season with a 69-53 home win over VTSU Castleton.
Trailing by 13 late in the first quarter and by 11 after ten minutes, Plymouth outscored Eastern by 16-6 in the second quarter to pull to within a point at halftime. In that quarter, five different players scored for Plymouth and eight grabbed at least one rebound to help the Panthers to a +6 on the boards in that quarter.
In the game, Plymouth's bench – led by sophomore forward Hailey Malozzi -- outscored Eastern's by 17 points. Malozzi had 12 points and Peck finished with seven. In Eastern's win at Plymouth, Malzozzi had two points in seven minutes. Graduate guard Lea Crompton, who was held to four points in 32 minutes in Eastern's 59-52 victory over Plymouth at Foley Gymnasium Jan. 13, led her team with 14 points, junior guard Bri Wilcox added 13. Wilcox had 19 points the first time around against Eastern, and after a slow start Saturday, scored nine points in the second half.
