Box Score
GORHAM, Maine – The first match that
Greg DeVito coached against the University of Southern Maine in his first season at Eastern Connecticut State University 17 years ago represented the team's only Little East Conference loss in seven games that season.
Since that loss at Hannaford Field in 2007, DeVito and the Warriors had won 15 consecutive overall games against the Huskies. Saturday, DeVito' s 326
th match as head coach at Eastern
made him the all-time leader in that category in the program's 65-year history, eclipsing by one the mark of his predecessor, Frantz Innocent, under whom DeVito also spent as Innocent's two-year assistant before taking over the reins in 2007.
While Eastern (1-3-3, 0-0-1 LEC) did not extend that long winning streak during DeVito's milestone game, the 1-1 tie against Southern Maine (1-3-4, 0-0-1 LEC) did extend the unbeaten streak against USM to 16 and helped the Warriors break a modest two-game losing streak. It was the fifth road contest in the first seven outings this year for Eastern, which returns to play five of seven home contests at Rick McCarthy Field in the month of October.
While DeVito has now coached more matches at Eastern than any of the previous five coaches, he had already carried two titles into his 18th season: most wins (202) and best winning percentage (.680).
Saturday, it looked like sophomore
Noah Page's (Stafford Springs) second goal of the season just seven minutes into play might eventually be enough to provide the Warriors with their 16
th straight victory against the Huskies before the hosts finally gained the equalizer midway through the second half on junior Asa Farley's first career goal.
Senior
Nathan Yeich (Willington) and first-year player
Jack Harmon (Manasquan, NJ) combined on four saves in splitting minutes over the 90-minute game. Eastern had the edge in shots (15-13) and corner kicks (9-4).
Eastern plays the second of four straight LEC contests next Saturday when it visits Keene State College at 1 p.m. Against Keene in 2007, DeVito posted the first of his six LEC playoff championships with a penalty-kick victory at Thomas Nevers Field.
