Women's Lacrosse: Warriors Make Run at Defending Champions, Fall Short

Box Score
MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team struck early but defending Little East Conference playoff champion Plymouth State University struck more often as the Panthers remained unbeaten in the conference with a 21-14 victory Saturday afternoon at Rick McCarthy Field.

Plymouth (12-2, 6-0 LEC) improved to 16-3 against Eastern (11-4, 3-3 LEC) in the last 19 games in the series, stopping the Warriors' two game winning streak and chalking up its eighth straight win since losing two straight to New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) road opponents.

The Panthers remain in first place in the conference, a game ahead of Western Connecticut, which survived a 14-13 decision at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday. Eastern shares fifth place in the conference with UMass Dartmouth, which it hosts Wednesday at 5 p.m. in its regular-season home finale on Senior Night.

The top six seeds qualify for the LEC playoffs, which get underway with first-round games Aril 29.

Eastern led 3-0 after the opening five minutes and 5-1 late in the first quarter before the Panthers chipped away, finally tying the lead for good by scoring the final three goals of the first half and take a two-goal lead into the half.

Leading by two, Plymouth outscored Eastern 8-3 in the final quarter, getting three goals in the quarter from  junior attack Morgan Cunningham.

Juniors Alexa Vizzini (Vernon, NJ) and Sydney Goyette (Westfield, MA) led Eastern with four goals each, senior midfielder Abby Parisi (Fairfield) assisting on three goals and scoring one and winning four draws. Graduate attack Avonleea LeBeau (North Branford) had three goals and won six draws.

Vizzini reached 50 goals for the second straight season.

Eastern first-year goalie Maizie Rukat (Manchester, VT) made seven saves while senior Margie Black turned away 16 Eastern shots.
