Women's Soccer: Under Dreary Conditions, Offense Sputters in Shutout Loss

Box Score
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Eastern Connecticut State University offense has had its moments this year -- scoring nine total goals over the course of two  matches earlier this month and outshooting its opponent nearly two-to-one in its first seven matches this season.

One of those moments did not occur in a mid-week non-conference road match against Union College as the Warriors were outshot 17-5 and had a three-match unbeaten (2-0-1) streak stopped in a 3-0 loss at rain-soaked College Park Field.

In the first meeting between the programs, Union (5-2-1) scored the only goal that it would need with 13 minutes gone -- the first allowed by Eastern (4-2-2) in 181 minutes over two shutouts -- and added an insurance marker 15 minutes into the second half and went on to its fourth win in its last five outings. The contest was Eastern's first against an opponent outside New England since a season-opening 1-1 tie against St. Joseph's University (L.I.) at Rick McCarthy Field.

Junior Taylor Bovardi  and senior Anabelle Thomas combined on Union's first two goals, Bovardi scoring her second of the season off a cross from Thomas, then found Thomas at the left post for a one-timer in the 61st minutes for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Bovardi's assist was her team-leading fifth.

Eastern was outshot, 7-2 in trailing 1-0 at halftime. Sophomore Kaeden Dublin (Maple Grove, MN) made four saves over the first 45 minutes -- robbing a Union shot midway through the half on a point-blank shot with the Warriors already down 1-0, then came off her line with 15 minutes left in the half to beat a breaking defender and  cover up the ball to keep the deficit at one goal. Ten minutes later, the Garnet Chargers nearly made it 2-0, but senior Alayna Boileau -- who would score her team's third goal and her second of the season late in the second half -- hit the crossbar and senior defender Anne Pearl -- who set up her team's first goal by carrying out of the back -- sent the rebound wide.

Senior forward Lilly Simpson (Norwalk) and first-year forward Michaela Gasparri (Prospect) recorded Eastern's only two shots of the first half. Simpson's was blocked in the second minute and Union senior goalie Rachel Berliner made her only save of the half to deny Gasparri midway though the first half. Berliner retired from the game after one half, maintaining a 0.00 goals-against average in 285 minutes this year.

The first-half goal was the first allowed by Dublin in 249 minutes this year. Sophomore Alex Ignatowicz (Coventry) -- last year's Little East Conference Goalkeeper-of-the-Year -- came off the bench for the first time this year, playing the final 45 minutes and making three saves.

Eastern was outshot for only the third time this year. Union's  Berliner and junior Maya Koster split their team's minutes and saves.

Sophomore defender Adeline Stevens (Willington) made her first career start, playing 78 minutes.

Eastern visits the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in a non-conference match Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Warriors are 8-1 in the all-time series, having won the last seven and having outscored the Bears, 32-4, over nine matches.
